Why Monumental
Inscriptions

Below is one of the six volumes of Joslin burials that I have
produced this year
an index is at the foot of this large page (I hope you have
broadband)
Inscriptions
are what we all use in our research,
Parish registers are of course inscriptions made by the parish priest,
but, all so often, our old monumental inscriptions are overlooked.
Although not considered by some to be a primary source for research;
I have always considered them to be just as valuable as an entry in a parish
register,
all to often the details on the gravestones or wall tablets will give much more
details and,
usually more accurate data than the parish priest entered in his registers.
example:
1.
Names
Both surnames and given names are more likely to be spelt the way the family
preferred it on the
grave stone,
i.e. Joscelyne in life would not have been inscribed as Joslin and
visa versa.
I have, on occasions found instances where the parish priest has used his own
spelling of the
name Joslin
and yet the signature of the Joslin in the register was very different.
2. Ages
Ages and full dates of death and sometime full dates of birth are given in the
inscription.
3. Relationships
Relationships of the people i.e. Father, Mother, Wife, Sons, Daughters &
Grandparents etc.
4. Places
of abode
Places of abode i.e. farm name, village, house name,
and of course the parish that the inscription was found in shows a link to the
area.
5. Occupations
Occupations: some counties are much better at including this data than others,
I have found the graveyards in the North East especially good at including
occupations.
The occupation of the father can sometime give you the clue to which 'John' etc
is which
People were very proud of their occupations and they tended to run through
generations.
'Like Father, Like Son'
6.
What a find!
To find a good gravestone or indeed any inscription of your family
was an indication of someone being able to afford to pay for one!
There's quite a good chance that they or their family also left a will,
That’s
another story
covered on
Joslin Wills
PLEASE HELP ME TO HELP OTHER JOSLIN'S
Other Volumes
of Joslin inscriptions are in preparation
I would welcome any records of Joslin's by any spelling that you may have come
across,
you can supply them by: Phone, Post, and of course email would be preferred,
and a good photograph would be absolutely marvellous.
All the data that I collect is made freely available to anyone interested in our
Joslin Family History.
SAFETY FIRST
Please
take care when in graveyards, they can be very dangerous places;
They are full
of dead people, so make sure that you don't join them, even by accident.
This Warning is not a joke
Most of
our municipal cemeteries have recently been checked for stability of the
gravestones,
but, with vandalism all too prevalent these days, stones can
quickly become unsafe,
so please keep your distance from any gravestone that
looks at all suspect,
they are very heavy and people have been killed recently
by falling stones.
Remember that most of what you see and record today may not be available in
years to come,
the elements, vandalism and redevelopment take their toll on our
valuable family history
treasures every year,
Even in the 20 years of
visiting Essex graveyards,
I am now unable to find inscriptions that I recorded
all that time ago,
so if you can, please take a good photograph of any Joslin
or Goslin inscription you may find,
you will be preserving our history for posterity.
Family
History Societies throughout the UK are busy recording the Monumental
Inscriptions
and
Burial Records of our numerous grave yards,
Volunteers in the
society then publish the indexed records for us to purchase and they usually
place
them in
local libraries and County record officers for others to freely
benefit from (we in Lancashire do).
Areas
that had a lot of Joslin's were ESSEX, SUFFOLK, HERTFORDSHIRE, LONDON, KENT and
DEVON
all these counties have good Family History Societies;
they would welcome
volunteers to help with their projects.
