The Joslin Quest

This is a copy of the successful personal letter sent to over 100 unknown Joslin's
that were in the Essex area of England in 1995.

                                                                                                                                                         February 2nd 1995

                            Dear ? Joslin.

First I would like to introduce myself to you, 90 years ago my father Walter James JOSLIN was born in Witham Essex.
He was the only son of W
alter and Sarah Jane JOSLIN (nee Corley).
In 1934 my twin brother P
aul Michael and myself Peter Walter were born in Nottinghamshire,
so you will see that I am now sixty years old and not an Essex boy!

Although I know of no JOSLIN relations alive today I would dearly love to find out more about the lives they lived and trace my roots.
To this end I now have over 3,000 JOSLIN'S in a computer data base of various spellings, the majority of them are from Essex and Suffolk
but also lots from abroad and most are linked into family trees, one going back to 1100 AD.
I would like to enlist your help in saving as much JOSLIN family history as possible and I have enclosed a SAE and a small questionnaire,
which I hope you could find time to complete and return to me with your comments.
If you can think of other members of your family or know of anyone anywhere with connections to Joslin's that may be interested,
please pass my letter on to them or let me know and I will send them a letter.

In Essex I know of my line marrying into the following families: THOROGOOD, TOCKLEY, CORLEY, FIRMAN, BOND, DIAPER,
PEASE, VALENTINE, CUTMORE, ANDREWS, AVES, BARBER, CARTER, FARTHING, and, SMITH (Daisy May).
For my own line I am connected mainly with the areas of WITHAM, RIVENHALL, CRESSING, BOCKING, BRAINTREE,
Black & White. NOTLEY, Lt & Gt. WALTHAM'S, HATFIELD PEVERAL, KELVEDON, TERLING, MALDON,
EASTHORPE & BISHOP STORTFORD.

I must have hundreds of distant relations in the area but know very little of them! I mentioned earlier that I was a twin,
I am always on the look
-out for twins or multiple births. Do you know of any? I have found quite a few.
It is often jokingly said that Family History Research should carry a government health warning. Be warned it is very addictive but also very satisfying.
It also helps to have an understanding partner (as I have).  Essex and Suffolk have excellent family history societies that can help you
and we do have a strong and active' JOSSELIN SOCIETY' with members of various spellings from around the world,
it's thought that we all stem from a Duke Josselin who came across with the Conqueror in 1066 (who knows)?
I would appreciate your help with my quest
,
but remember I am only too pleased to share what information I have with YOU so if you are interested: Phone 01524 420841.

You may be thinking that I make a charge for the information.
Be assured that
NO CHARGES are made
and my only aim is to leave the JOSLIN'S of the future with as much family history as I can find in the time left to me.
I am a member of the SOCIETY OF GENEALOGISTS in London and I hope that my work will be left with them
for any one to have access to in the future.
Yours Faithfully.
P
eter Walter JOSLIN.
